In the city center you will find two very impressive buildings - St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Hvar Theatre.
Cathedral of St. Stephan is located on the eastern side of the town square, at the far end of the Pjaca. It was built in the 6th century in traditional Dalmatian style.
Hvar Theatre is at the other end of the town square and it is the first European public theatre. It was built in 16th century.
Be sure to also visit Hvar fortress.
Fortica Fortress was built in 16th century, on a hill above the old part of town Hvar. Now, this fortress has been turned into a museum worth checking out. From the fortress you can also enjoy beautiful panoramic view of Hvar and Pakleni otoci and take lots of great pictures! Fortress has a souvenir shop and a bar. Working hours are 8 AM – 9 PM.
Tucked away in a little backstreet of Hvar town is Summer Residence of Hanibal Lucić, famous Croatian poet. It was built in 1530. in beautiful Renaissance style. It consists of two houses built in beautiful Renaissance style, and a lovely walled garden surrounded by a promenade and family crests Lucić and Gazarović.
You can go there to escape the city noise and sneak a peek at time long gone. In the past couple of years, it has also become a popular wedding venue.
A visit to Hvar is not complete without a visit to the famous club Carpe Diem. It’s where world’s elite comes to party when they come to Croatia (think: Prince Harry, Eva Longoria, Tom Cruise). Legend even says one tourist, when trying to buy ferry ticket for Hvar, requested a ticket for Carpe Diem :)
